My car won't start and when I turn the key there is a winding noise..?
I tried to start my car tonight and when I turned the key, there was a winding noise coming from under the hood. What could this be? My engine will not turn over. The battery is fine and I just got the starter changed. Thanks.
The engine did not turn because the gear on starter did not touch the gear on the flywheel. That is why the howling sound came (the starter runs extremely fast, because of no load).
The problems may be:
the teeth on the flywheel gear were broken where the starter gears reach or the flywheel gear is worn out too much.
for some reason, the starter gear does not reach far enough to engage the flywheel gear. this case, you might need another starter.
Try to turn the crank shaft by hand by turning the cooling fan blade by hand while having some one push down a crank shaft belt (to create more tension on the crank shaft bulley so it can turn while the belt is moving). by doing this you can move to another area where there is no broken teeth or less worn out teeth.
Remember if the engine is hot, the cooling fan can start at any time. so be sure to turn the cooling fan by hand only when the engine is cool.
