How to pack a grandfather clock for a move
If you own a Grandfather Clock or tall-case clock you need to take a good care of it, so that it lasts for a long time (or until something happened). It will help you to use it for a long time, if you safely packing a grandfather clock, that will help to prevent damages during your move. Whether you are moving in local, another city or another country, it is better to take extra care to your old friend. There are professional moving companies that there are expert on these kinds of items. But if you like to do that by yourself, it is fine, but give yourself an extra time to separate the pieces carefully. (Don't forget remember each pieces place when you put them back, usually you are going to have some extra pieces when you place all the parts, joking!!!!!) So, let me explain how to remove all the parts safely. You don't want to have a surprise when you reach your destinasion.
With the moving season right around the corner, every week I will be sharing some of my knowhow about packing of the some of the oddest items in a household. This week the topic is grandfather clock.
If you want enjoy your Grandfather Clock in a good working condition as long as possible, you will need to take very good care of it when it comes time to move it. Grandfather clocks cannot be moved safely unless they are dismantled. You will need to know the safest way to dismantle and safest way to pack it, unless you hire a local moving professional to do the job which I strongly recommend that you do. If you are up for a challenge here how it's done;
FIRST thing you need to do is carefully remove all the weights one by one and number them. Although they might look similar the weights don't all weight the same. It is imperative for you to know where each weight should be placed. All the weights should be packed and numbered in bubble wrap separately.
NEVER leave any shelves and shelf parts inside of the Grandfather clock. Remove them all carefully. If your Grandfather clock came with glass shelves remove them one by one. Pack them separately with bubble wrap and cover them with cardboard. Make sure you write FRAGILE/GLASS on the cardboard.
ALWAYS remove the pendulum and keep it in the original box it came in. When you remove it watch out for the suspension spring at the top of the pendulum.
SECURE the clock case with straps and moving blankets in the truck. Make sure it does not move around. Keep all other parts away from the case.
strongly recommend that you hire a professional moving company to do the job. If you still want a challenge and take it upon yourself, read on to learn the best way to pack a Grandfather Clock so that it does not end up badly damaged when you reach your final destination.
