How do you make a puppy sleep through the night (had her for four weeks)?

I have had Penny, a miniature pinscher for four weeks and she still doesn't sleep through the night. I've bought her a Comfort Pal with the heart beat and heat, I've tried the clock ticking, her sleeping with the cage by my bed and alone in the bathroom. I've tried with the light on and with it off. I've tried with food in the cage, etc. Nothing is working!! I would love to hear some of your suggestions please!

Dogs get up in the middle of the night and and whine for different reasons. Once you find the reason, it will be easier to solve the problem.

One reason is she needs to go to the bathroom. This is very common because young pups can only hold their bladder for 3-5 hours at a time. Keep a flashlight by your bed. Next time she wakes up, take her outside and see if she goes potty. If she does, then all you need to do is restrict the amount of food and water she gets three hours before bedtime. Also, make sure she goes potty before she goes to bed.

Another reason is she is frightened. Look through her eyes for a moment. You woke up. It's dark. You are alone. You try to move, but you run into these cold metal bars. It would certainly frighten you! If the first method doesn't work, when she wakes up, play with her for a bit. Let her know you are here, it's all right, there's no reason to be afraid. Then she will get tired and fall back to sleep with you at her side. After doing this for a few nights, she should stop bothering you.

Maybe she's simply not tired! She could be taking naps in the evening, so at midnight she's up and ready to play! Keep her awake in the evening with activities and games. You really need to tire her out. Every night I take my four month old corgi out for a long walk around 10, so she's tired at 11 and crashes and sleeps the night away. Also, don't let her take any naps within four hours of her bedtime. If she tries to fall asleep, wake her up and take her for a walk or something.

Make sure her crate feels like a cozy, safe, and secure place to sleep. You need to make it feel like her "den." Most people have the bottom of their dog's crate lined with newspaper so if she goed potty its easier to clean. Would you feel comfortable sleeping on the cold, hard plastic? No! Fold up a few fleece blankets and cover the bottom of the crate. Also, put a light blanket over the crate to make your dog feel more secure (If it's hot out, only cover the top to keep the crate cool.) Put toys in the crate and make sure she has access to water. Every time the fleece is soiled, make sure you wash it. The more comfortable your dog is in her crate, the less likely she will wake up and want to get out.

Above all, you want to get to the point where she is accustom to sleeping in her crate. When you see her sleeping around your house, pick her up and have her take her nap in her crate.
