Kids and clocks: time to learn

Five of the best games and toys which will help kids learn how to tell the time. Plus: a new way of playing ‘What's the time Mr Wolf?'

Some of us are old enough to remember when affordable digital electronic watches first hit the high streets in the late 1970s.

It was thought that these futuristic space-age contraptions would revolutionise our time-keeping and make it much easier for kids to learn about time.

But, over 30 years later, analogue watches are still on many people's wrists. So, spare a thought for children who have to learn to read both analogue and digital clocks!

Luckily, Baker Ross has plenty of children's educational toys and games which can help children learn about the concept of time and time-management.

A Time Tracker is shaped a little like a lighthouse and has green, yellow and red lights which flash as time runs out. Ideally-sized for putting on classroom desks, this visual timer will help kids count down time elapsing in arts and crafts activities, tests and sports challenges.

Tell the Time Lotto is a terrific way of getting children to have fun while learning – after all, a little sugar helps the medicine go down! This ingenious variation on the traditional lotto game has four playing boards and 64 lotto cards featuring simple clock faces, digital watches and Roman numerals. Each game can be played by up to four players; it's a lotto, lotto fun!

Tell The Time Snap also gives a clever twist to a well-known game. Instead of cards with jokers, kings and queens on, this game has cards with pictures of digital clocks, alarm clocks and analogue clocks – all with different times on. Can the kids match two cards and cry out ‘snap' quickly enough to beat their rivals? Don't forget to think up a cunning penalty for players who incorrectly call out ‘snap'!

A Tell the Time Wipe Clean Board can let children play teacher by drawing the hands of the clock onto the printed face and getting their classmates to guess what the time is. It's a super exercise to do at the end of the school day just before it's time to go home.

This board could be used in a game of What's the Time Mr Wolf? Just appoint the day's star pupil to be Mr Wolf and get them to turn their back on the other kids lined up at a good distance behind them.

Mr Wolf can read out the times that the teacher has drawn on the clock face with the other kids advancing in steps according to what the time is (four o'clock = four steps, half past two = two and a half steps etc.) When it's one o'clock it's time for dinner and time for Mr Wolf to turn around and chase the class!

After all that game-playing, kids will be tired out! A Colour Change Aurora Alarm Clock will ensure that they wake up the next morning ready for more fun, games and learning. The glowing colours on this alarm clock change every hour – who wouldn't want to wake up to an amazing light show?
